Edinburgh Council plan new 'city hub' with forest nursery, arts centre and flats

The City of Edinburgh Council plan to create the new civic centre in Pennywell and Muirhouse as part of the council led regeneration, which will see over 1000 new homes being delivered in the area.

The plans show that Pennywell and Muirhouse's new civic centre will be called the MacMillan Hub.

The Muirhouse Shopping Centre is currently partly being demolished, with the loss of over 30 shops and 48 residential flats but the new centre will lead the regeneration plans.

The council validated the planning application on May 27.

The application seeks approval for the proposed four-storey development.

They nursery, Forest Kindergarten, will take up two stories of the building.

The new library and skills centre will be built and the art centre will be reconfigured and extended.

Associated landscaping, parking, drainage and other related development are also included in the planning application.

On site there will also be six flats available for social rent.

The council's lifelong learning service manager, Scott Donkin, said: "The proposed development's layout and design meets our needs and addresses the Council Business Plan ambitions to have library and information services at the heart of community and individual wellbeing.
