Andy Brooker describes the highly innovative Arts
and Social Network, a unique resource developed
specifically to provide social opportunities for people
who experience social exclusion because of their
diagnostic label of personality disorder. The Network
supports people to make new connections with
others who face similar challenges through monthly
arts-based events held in and around central London.
And finally, Neil Springham and colleagues
describe ResearchNet, a ground-breaking project
based within Oxleas Foundation NHS Trust in south
east London, which aims to involve service users
and carers in the research functions of the Trust as a
means of supporting recovery.
As always, do let me know about any creative
approaches to promoting social inclusion. And do
tell me what you think of the Journal and what you
would like to see in it!

Welcome to the February issue of Mental Health
and Social Inclusion. We hope you find it a
stimulating read.
As always, we start with Simon Lawton-Smith’s
Policy watch, an invaluable overview of current
developments in mental health policy across the UK.
His regular updates will become increasingly useful
to us all as the coalition government’s plans for
health and social care take shape.
Sue Holttum offers the first in what will be a
regular reflection on recent research relating to
mental health and social inclusion issues. Social
forces contribute to both the causes and amelioration
of mental distress, but it is no mean feat to keep
abreast of research in this area that lurks in a wide
variety of disciplines. Sue’s Research watch will
hopefully go some way to helping us keep track of
some of the more interesting findings.
Mary Weston and Eleanor McCann describe
Mersey Care Reads, a fascinating collaborative project
between The Reader Organisation and Mersey Care
NHS Trust. Every week, service users and staff in 35
wards and day centres around Merseyside take an
hour out of their week to read and reflect together
on literature. Reading literature aloud in groups can
promote confidence, raise people’s moods, improve
concentration and help to develop communication
and social skills.
Robin Johnson and Rex Haigh continue their
thought-provoking series on new concepts in social
psychiatry and social policy, this time exploring the
notion of ‘Enabling Environments’.
