Dear Readers and Scholars,
At the conclusion of last year, Professor Jonathan Doak retired as Editor-in-Chief of the International
Journal of Evidence and Proof. The service and leadership Jonathan gave to this Journal is but one
reason for his recognition and esteem amongst this journal’s audience and the community of profes-
sionals who study and practise within disciplines concerned with evidence and proof.
He was the foundation Editor of the journal when it came to be published by SAGE in 2015. He led as
chief Editor from June 2015 to December 2019. Eighteen issues of the journal have been published under
his stewardship, including a number of dedicated and special issues.
Jonathan worked towards wider and greater recognition of our scholarship. In 2018, the Journal was
indexed in both Scopus and the Emerging Sources Citations Index. During his tenure, scholars have
increasingly sought out the Journal as the forum for publication of their scholarship, with a 116 percent
increase in submissions. The Journal has also markedly grown as the resource for critical research
regarding matters of evidence and proof around the globe, with usage of the Journal increasing by
241 percent during Jonathan’s time as Editor. Throughout his time as Editor, Jonathan has ably served
all contributors and readers of this Journal through his efforts to compile issues which not only provide
depth of analysis and thought but an assembly of papers which indicate the developments in evidence
and proof across countries, fields and perspectives.
Jonathan himself principally researches in the field of criminal justice, having particular regard to
issues of protection, participation and reparation. He is an expert in legal systems and reform to better
support the evidence of children and persons with disabilities to give evidence and take part in the
criminal justice process. It has been a pleasure to work and collaborate with Jonathan through confer-
ences and scholarship in this shared field of interest and I look forward, as I am sure do others, to his
continuing contributions of research.
Those who know Jonathan will know a colleague who is generous with knowledge, time and support.
I know Jonathan would like me to thank those with whom he has worked as Editor. In particular, on
Jonathan’s behalf, thanks are extended to Michael Plaxton (Noticeboard Editor), Gemma Davies (Book
Reviews Editor), Jeremy Robson (Case Note Editor) and Mark Thomas (Assistant Editor), together with
Chantal Slaney, our Publishing Editor, and the team at SAGE.
I am delighted that Jonathan has agreed to remain on the Editorial Board of the Journal and will
continue to share his knowledge and time with our community of scholars and readers. I trust all will join
me in gratitude to Jonathan for his work as Editor and congratulations for the success the Journal has
enjoyed in his hands.
