Last summer, Europe recorded its hottest temperatures for 500 years. Despite forecasters' caution in predicting similar statistics for this year, we have already enjoyed a few consecutive days of sunshine, as any glance around the work place will confirm. Sunburnt faces, a sudden urge to eat and drink outside on the pavement (regardless of choking traffic fumes) and a mass exodus for the coast each bank holiday are all sure-fire signs that summer has arrived in the UK.

As a nation, we are spoilt by the number of activities available to us on which to spend our pocket money and boost the national economy. Even the once small, highly exclusive events such as the Wimbledon tennis championships and the Henley regatta are now popular institutions, attracting thousands of fans and millions of pounds in sponsorship. Alternatively, for those who prefer a bit of what would have once been called counter-culture, there are music and arts festivals galore at which to lay down a picnic blanket and crack open a bottle or two. But, whether you impress your friends with a 20,000 [pounds sterling] centre court debenture or that coveted 115 [pounds sterling] Glastonbury ticket, one thing's for sure: the people who are actually running these events are not taking our leisure time lying down (page 18).

If the thought of taking a few days off to relax and recuperate with some like-minded souls is the last thing on your mind at the moment, spare a thought for the management accountants branching out and going it alone in business.
