A couple of the contributors to FM's October issue referred to efficiency--for example, "must improve its efficiency in providing ... management information". I hope that what they meant to say was "improve its effectiveness". Commendable as it is, efficiency is no substitute for effectiveness.

Management is specific work that requires skills including the ability to make effective decisions. Efficiency is doing things right, but effectiveness is doing the right things, so it's important to be clear about the difference.
