Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to look into how effective new learning methods are in today’s
workforce. The traditional learning styles are no longer optimal; it is important that companies look
ahead and adapt to new training styles.
Design/methodology/approach The team at Braidio has over 20 years of technical, operations and
start-up experience in the internet, wireless and security industries. Over the years they have noticed
these shifts in learning technology as it moves from more traditional methods to a more social
experience.
Findings To effectively train existing and new employees, companies must adapt to the
technological and generational changes that are impacting the modern workforce. Mobile and social
learning are becoming more prominent as these types of media are more easily digested by the growing
millennial population.
Originality/value Braidio is the first company to adapt to this new model of learning and has been
able to provide a unique solution that can be built directly into a company’s workflow. The modern
workforce will continue to evolve, and the companies that are ahead of the curve will end up benefiting
the most in the long run.

Evolution of online learning
Formal training is like preparing to run standing upright with your heels planted at the
starting line. If someone were to push you, you would likely fall down. When online training
first came to fruition, it was very linear and formal, it consisted of copying instructor led
presentations and simply posting online with a voice over. Entire classes were taught
through text that never left the same page.
Over time, as technology continued to advance, learning methods began to be less formal
and rely more on collaboration. The year 2004 brought the birth of Facebook, which
radically changed social interacting. While social media was not at first seen as a business
tool, its sensibilities seeped into every crevasse of how people interact with one another,
with media and in effect how they consume learning.
Suddenly, millions of people were connected on a single medium, sharing pictures,
thoughts and files at a click of a button. It was only a matter of time before the business
world caught up and began to harness the power of social networks. Keeping employees
connected is the first step toward making sure knowledge can assimilate cleanly through
an organization.
Today, online learning has evolved into a more personalized, digital experience for
employees. The current business landscape requires the agility and the ability to be
malleable. There is no longer a place for formal, siloed, instructor led training or long form
