In the months since the ballots were
cast in June’s European Parliament
elections a new yet familiar political
landscape has settled in Brussels.
The 2024 EP election results left the
European Union with a Parliament that is
more right-wing, more fragmented, and
more polarised than ever before. This
new composition has already exhibited
some familiar patterns from previous
Parliaments, yet it has also disrupted
established dynamics as new allegiances
have been formed and new issues have
come to the fore.
The election of Donald Trump in the
United States and upcoming elections due
in many European states will bring fresh
challenges for the European Parliament.

June’s European Parliament elections saw major gains for the radical
right. Gilsun Jeong examines how the Parliament has functioned in
the months since and finds reasons for optimism and pessimism for
Eurosceptics and Europhiles alike.
Nevertheless, the months since June’s
elections offer hints at how the Parliament’s
novel configuration could play out in the
years ahead – both for supporters of the
European Union and for its opponents.
A rightward shift
The centrist pro-European grand coalition
remains the dominant force in the
European Parliament. The coalition is
made up of three groups: the centre-right
European People’s Party (EPP), represented
by Germany’s CDU/CSU; the centre-left
Progressive Alliance of Socialists and
Democrats (S&D), including France’s Parti
