Evaluator Perspective
Colin Sharp
In a career of over 40 years, Dr. Colin Sharp has used evaluation in his capacity as a
consultant, a manager, a director as well as a coach, and an academic. Colins as-
sociation with the Australian Evaluation Society (AES) goes way back to 1987 as a
founding member who was instrumental in the establishment of the Society. His
commitment continued as the Foundation Chair of the Committee for Ethics and
Standards in Evaluation, Co-Editor of the Evaluation Journal of Australasia (EJA), and
President of the AES. Colin was recognised for his work in evaluation with the ET&S
Award (1992) and was conferred as a Fellow of the AES in 2003.
Based in Adelaide, Colin currently teaches evaluation and research methods at both
the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide. Colin holds a BA with
f‌irst class Honours in Psychology from Flinders University (1974) and a PhD in Neuro-
Psychology from the University of Melbourne (1980). Colin worked for several years
in the Commonwealth and South Australian public sectors and several years in
governance roles in not-for-prof‌it organisations. He has produced over 60 publications,
including booklets, book chapters and conference papers on topics such as organ-
isational capacity building, organisational learning, strategic management and strategic
evaluation.
Colins extensive background in evaluation and his tireless work for the AES and the
EJA doesnt stop there, as you will see below. He has also contributed a book review for
this issue, a truly stalwart member who has given so much and paved the way for
evaluators and the f‌ield of evaluation over many years!
