Initial public offerings (IPOs) remain an effective way of raising capital during difficult market conditions, according to research by the London Stock Exchange and law firm Eversheds. In a survey of companies that floated on the London Stock Exchange between July 2001 and November 2002, 77 per cent of respondents said they were happy with the valuation they had received. The research also revealed that non-executive directors (Neds) were essential to the success of a flotation. Two-thirds of firms appointed new Neds in advance of the IPO and 81 per cent said that their Neds had made an important contribution since the flotation.
