Abstract
Purpose –This study concentrates on assessing the research productivity in the domain of social media security inthe pa st decades. The purpose of
this study is to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric review on social media using various bibliometric indicators.
Design/methodology/approach –A total of 8,121 scientific publications were retrieved from Scopus database from period 1998 to 2021 using
associated keyword search. This study also used VOSviewer

tool to evaluate the network visualisation.
Findings –The result of this study revealed that there is a steady growth of annual publications except for the years 2015 and 2016. A total of
8,121 scientific publications and 80,454 total citations were found with 11.2 average citations per publication. The USA, China and India were top
productive countries in terms of publishing research in the field; Chinese Academy of Sciences secured top position with 126 publications in highly
productive organisation in the domain. The lecture notes in computer science from Springer Nature received a highly produced title with 553
publications and 4,453 total citations. For co-occurrence of author’s keywords, network visualisation ana lysis revealed that “Social Media”,“Social
Network”,“Security”,“Privacy”and “Trust”found maximum occurrence in the domain of social media security.
Research limitations/implications –This study provides comprehensive research status of social media security by performing a bibliometric
analysis. The findings of this study will help relevant researchers to understand the research trend, pur sue scientific collaborators and enhance
research topic preferences.
Originality/value –The rareness of this study, detailed bibliometric analysis on the domain of social media security, is proven using numerous
bibliometric indicators and application of VOSviewer in the domain.

Introduction
According to the world social media statistics released on 2nd
September 2021, currently 4.48billion people use social media
globally with a total 61% of the world population using social
media. People spendan average of 2 h 24 min on social media a
day, and over nine in ten internet users now use social media
each month. Facebook is leadingsocial network with 2.9 billion
monthly active users followed by YouTube with 2.3 billion,
WhatsApp with 2 billion, FB Messenger with 1.3 billion
and WeChat with 1.2 billion active users which shows a
significant use of social media by the world community

Communication is an essential partof human life. The mode
of communication has changed in the digital era (Tayouri,
2015). Social media is defined as a group of internet-based
applications that create or develop on the conceptual and
scientific foundations of Web 2.0 and that permit the
innovation and exchange of operator or user created content
(Kaplan and Haenlein, 2010). Social media is the heartbeat of
human life in the modern lifestyle, and it is a major spring of
information and a convenient way to connect peoplearound us
(Greenwood et al.,2016). Thus, it is essential to improve
the security and credibility of social media for impeccable
function and preferred upshot (Zhang and Gupta, 2018). It is
