Abstract
The role of h ealth has never entered th e debate about mi-
grant fe rtility. The main goal of this work was to e xplore,
for the first t ime, the relationship between health and
fertility intentions among migrants by gender, duration of
stay and parit y. Three hea lth measures were co nsidered:
self- rated health, the pres ence of chronic illnesses and
mental health. We compiled data from the It alian survey
"Social C ondition and Integ ration of Foreign Citizens" and
employed generalized order ed logistic models to test the
relationship bet ween health and ferti lity intentions among
migrants. Our findings show t hat poor health negatively
affects migrants’ fertilit y intenti ons, net of a wide arr ay
of control variables (including employment and rea son for
migration). This is espe cially true among long- term migrant
women, and, among the latter, the effect is strongest when
chronic illnesses and me ntal health are considered. We en-
courage future r esearch to consider health in the demo-
graphic debate abo ut migrant fertility.
