The former defender has been promoted from academy director to become the main man, succeeding Graham Alexander, who stepped down last month

The Fir Park hall of fame inductee was put in temporary charge but, after going through a full interview process, the Motherwell board decided to give him the job on a two-year contract, along with assistant Brian Kerr.

The new Motherwell boss said: "It has been a quick two weeks, a lot has happened in there and it has flown by. I am ready to go.

"It was a strange one, because I was absolutely delighted for five seconds and then I had to start thinking about what needs to be done.

"We were preparing as if this was going to happen and we had prepared as much as we could and then the enormity of the job came in.

"There is a lot of work to be done quickly and I am just looking to get started as quickly as possible."

Hammell, 40, knows his lack of top-level management might raise some eyebrows but he feels he is ready to hit the ground running at Fir Park.

"I have been preparing for something like this for a long, long time," he said.

"I was in charge of the academy, which is a huge responsibility at the club. I have been on the pitch daily for a couple of years now in and around the reserve squad and integrating with the first team.

"I feel it is something I am ready to do and the fact the interview process was the way it was - where I knew I wasn't just going to be given to me because of my role at the club just now - it was a very robust process and a few people got interviewed.
