Hopes are raised for arena project again

The plans looked to be going nowhere fast when in February Redcar and Cleveland Council rejected a proposal by Coatham Arena Limited (CAL) to site an arena where the former Coatham Bowl in Redcar once stood

Cllr Chris Gallacher, cabinet member for economic development, stated it was not satisfied that the proposed site in Coatham was suitable or the project itself viable going forward.

But a joint statement by both sides issued to the Local Democracy Reporting Service suggested an option agreement being sought by the would-be developer could still be on the cards.

It said: "Coatham Arena Ltd and the council are engaged in constructive, but confidential, discussions around the future development of the Coatham Bowl site with the intention of agreeing an option agreement which is acceptable to both parties.

"We will continue pragmatic discussions over the coming months and when we are in a position to update the public an updated statement will be given."

The arena proposal had received backing from rock stars such as Sting and Redcar-born David Coverdale of Whitesnake, while an online petition has attracted more than 6,000 signatures . However, despite public support, there appeared to be limited appetite from the council for the arena, with the local authority pursuing its own regeneration plans for Coatham, to include a new 100- space car park.

Meanwhile, a public meeting called to outline the plans was attended by only one council member - Cllr Andrea Turner, the wife of Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Steve Turner, a non-executive director of CAL.
