Host council 'blind' to the dear grime place

Many street bins are overflowing and the council has cut back on street-sweeping and litterpicking to concentrate on "essential" services.

Labour is calling for a cross-party effort to tackle the problem before the world's leaders arrive in

November, with one councillor describing Glasgow as "manky beyond belief".

However, the ruling SNP group claims the problem is exaggerated for political reasons and council leader Susan Aitken says the city merely needs "spruced up".

And the man in charge of street cleaning, Stephen Egan, told a Sunday newspaper he was "puzzled" by the criticism.

He said: "I have heard comments saying it is a filthy city. I have heard comments that there is a cleansing crisis.

"I see very little evidence that would support those particular views.

"There are parts within neighbourhoods that I am not happy with.We have a plan in order to improve that. But I don't think we can just wipe out what has happened over the last 18 months and some of the enormous challenges.
