Ice work...Sir David's -18C Arctic adventure

The trouper, then aged 93, braved the Arctic circle in northern Finland to show viewers where temperate climate ends and the ice world begins

The region had suffered its heaviest snow in 38 years. But Sir David landed on the very day it stopped tumbling down - then the sun came out while he addressed a drone camera from his snowdrift.

Producer Rosie Thomas said: "It was an amazing experience. He had hot water bottles and heated blankets and he was wearing about six coats at one point.

"The day we filmed with David it was -18 at the top of the mountain, it was cold! The day David was there the sun came out and shone wonderfully.

"He brought it with him. It was absolutely stunningly beautiful."

Executive producer Mike Gunton also revealed the crew were lucky to make it at all because they went as the pandemic was starting to strike in February 2020.

Mike said it was already "quite an undertaking" for the star just three months shy of his 94th birthday.

He added: "We got off the plane just as they were just beginning to shut everything down. So that was the last foreign filming trip we did.We got back just in the nick of time."

Tomorrow's Seasonal Worlds episode of the plant series also took the team to one of their hottest locations - South Africa. Rosie said: "That was hot! We filmed a story about a fire lily which waits underground for 20 years.

"It's a habitat that relies on fire to burn through it, all the plants in this area are adapted for fire.

"Floristically it's the most biodiverse place on the planet - it's got 9,000 species of flowering plant.
