Sometimes when we're doing our jobs, we're really not ourselves.

If you were among the billions of people around the world who went to work this week, which version of you showed up at the workplace? Was it one that your friends outside the company would recognise? Was it congruent with your status in the organisation? Were you the same character that you'd promised to be at your recruitment interview? Would you have made your family proud?

It is easy to convince ourselves that external factors, such as organisational structures, operational protocols and cultural norms determine the versions of ourselves that are active in the careers we have chosen, but a crucial factor that affects who we are when we're working comes from within.

Our personal working mindsets, our paradigms of thinking and the ways in which we react while we're doing our jobs are ultimately what affect our long-term performance at work. Think for a moment about yourself, operating at your very best - those memorable occasions when you were switched on, active and engaged; those times when what you delivered made a positive difference to your colleagues and customers. Then ask yourself:
