Impressive Young loan star proves his worth

The 17-year-old has risen through the ranks at the Academy of Light since the age of seven, being thrust into the senior set-up during last summer's pre-season tour of the United States

Since then, shot-stopper Young has continued to impress, enjoying an impressive loan stint at National League North side Darlington during the second half of the campaign.

He featured 13 times for the Quakers, and Steve Watson's side won ten of those matches, with Young playing a pivotal role in their survival from relegation.

Quakers boss Watson previously told The Sunday Sun that Young has "got absolutely everything to make it to the top", and the youngster has candidly admitted his 'successful' season has come as a surprise.

Young, who signed his first professional deal at Sunderland in November on the back of his stellar performances in the States - in which he featured in a 3-2 win over New Mexico United - told the club's media: "(It was) a bit of a shock really with how the season's panned out.

"I came in as an under-16 obviously progressing into a first year scholar and then immediately I got rushed into the first team into a pre-season tour and I got the ability to play there, which I'm very grateful for.

"When we were out there the lads were great and the staff were great and I got the ability to play, which was even better and we won 3-2.

"Then after that it took a turn to playing the 21s for the first time and then playing a mix of 18s and 21s up to Christmas and the start of New

Year and then I've got my first loan to Darlington and that's been quite successful." Young has certainly caught the eye after his impressive Quakers loan, with reports stating League Two outfit Notts County are interested in snapping him up on a loan deal. The Sunday Sun understands a loan move to a National League or League Two side is the probable next move.

On the Darlington loan, Young said: "For me, Darlington was quite unexpected. I got told on Thursday, 'Do you want to go on loan?'. I said yeah, I didn't really think much about it, and then found out was playing on the Saturday, and from then we've taken off and obviously the experience there has been great.
