During my 40 + years of e xperience working as a migration expert in acade mia, governm ent and think tanks,
I have had many opportunitie s to enga ge with t he Internation al Organizati on for Mi gration. Som e of the most
pleasurable personally and profession ally are those involvi ng the journal, International Migration. This long
engagement, in turn, allows me to reflect on two- thirds of the 60 years of the journal's o perations. Dur ing this
period, the journal ha s shifted fro m a largely i n- house vehicle th rough which IO M explored th e issues under its
mandate to an acade mically rigorous outlet f or cutting- edge research on m any facets of global migrat ion.
The journal was launched in 1961 by the Intergovernmental Commit tee on Eu ropean Migration (ICEM),
IOM’s p redecessor (s ee Vitorino's contribution , this issue). The first volume began with an editorial explaining
its purp ose: “ICEM, an i nternational agenc y set up specif ically to facil itate migration, believes that by publishing
a review devoted to the study and disc ussion of the main questions connected with migration, it m ay make
some co ntribution to extending a deeper knowledge an d a greater understan ding of th e varied aspects of this
human phenomenon (ICEM, 1961).” The volume began with a Foreword by Marcus Daly, the Director of ICEM. It
included four original articles: The Influe nce of Migration on Australian Foreign Policy; Prospects and Machiner y
of European Migration Movements within the European Economic Community; The Imp ortance of Immigration
in t he Developme nt of Brazil; and Emigration from Greece. T he authors included a me mber of the Aus tralian
Parliament, an anonym ous author using the nom de plum e “Migrator”1. and academ ics from Brazil and Greece.
Also included were the res olutions of the thirteenth sessio n of ICEM’s council and brief reviews of three books on
migration. Co ntrast this with the fir st issue of volume 59 (2021), which has 15 origi nal articles by academ ics from
throughout th e world and three comment aries on the impact s of COVID- 19 on labour mig ration.
My own involvement w ith International Migration is as an auth or, editor, reader and policymake r. International
Migration has published about a dozen of my articles and commentaries . The art icles generall y focus on issues
related to govern ance, law and public policy— reflecting my own a reas of academic and broader professional
interest. During my time in the government , think tank s and academia , I have read m any articles in International
Migration that affecte d my own unders tanding of migration issues (see Kofman, this issue, which details International
Migration's contr ibution to the s tudy of gender an d migration). During the 1980s, I fou nd the section entitled
Publications , Periodicals, Pamphlet s to be parti cularly useful as it introduced me to materials from Africa , Asia and
