Abstract
This ar ticle investigates homemaking as a set of p ractices
and a perspective on migr ants’ ways of local incorporation,
with its own material, emotio nal and relational under pin-
nings. Homemaking has the potential to emerge as an origi-
nal c ategory of analysis in immigrant integration, moving
beyond the contrapositio n b etween assimilationism and
transnationalism . Based also on our ongoing research , both
in the United St ates and in Europe, we argue fo r the sig-
nific ance of migrant s’ interact ions with spec ific local st ruc-
tures of opportunities, includi ng pe ople a nd ins titutions
as m uch as the built and natu ral environment . The latter
is a critical site where the meanings, opport unities and
contents of inte gration are negotiated bet ween immigrant
newcomers and their local and transnational counterparts.
Migrants’ strati fied rights, opportunities and aspi rations
to make thems elves at home open a promising research
perspective on group relations, as embedded in everyday
materialities. While integratio n is a multi- di mensional and
multi- scalar effor t, it still rests on pla ce- bound fields of in-
equalities and interaction within and between groups, and
on underlying differences in views, emotions and practices
of home. The se are both a mirror of larger asymmetries of
power and of the opportun ities available to challenge them.
