Islamic mental health financing schemes
for parents with mental disorder children

Abstract
Purpose –This study aims to examine the receptiveness of Islamic mental health financing schemes
among parentswith mental disorder children in Malaysia.
Design/methodology/approach –The innovationdiffusion theory (IDT) was used to examine the factors
influencingthe receptiveness using empiricaldata from 323 respondents.
Findings –The IDT’s factors, namely,compatibility, relative advantage and simplicitywere instrumental
in determiningthe receptiveness.
Research limitations/implications –The usefulness of the resultsobtained was confined to the theory
used as well as the geographicalareas chosen.
Practical implications –The results obtained serve as a useful reference guide for Islamic banks in
offeringthese schemes to parents with mental disorder children.
Originality/value –To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to test the effects of
financial innovation drivers on the proposed Islamic mental health financing schemes in terms of their
receptiveness.

Introduction
According to Global Health Data Exchange (2024), one in every eight people or 970 million
people around the world were living with a mental disorder in 2019. A mental disorder is
visualized by a clinically noteworthy commotion in an individual’s cognition, emotional
regulation or behaviour. There are many different types of mental disorders. These include
anxiety and depressive disorders which are the most common, followed by bipolar
disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders, disruptive and
behaviour. Health systems are severely underfunded and have not yet provided for the
requirements of those with mental illnesses. Around the world, there is a large disparity
between the demand for therapy and its availability, and when it is, it is frequently of low
quality. For instance, barely one-third of those suffering from depression and 29% of those
with psychosis (World Health Organization, 2021) obtain official mental health treatment
(Moitra et al.,2022).
In this study, parents with mental disorder children need social supports, which can
contribute significantly to the well-being of both parents and children, fostering a more
supportive and understanding community. Children with mental illnesses may also need
support with psychotherapy, employment, educational opportunities and other meaningful
activities. They are impacted by everyday activities should take care of their mental health
issues for peace of mind and soul. However, parents who use mental health services for
their mentally ill children frequently do not perceive leisure and social activities as
accessible to them. The children who struggle with mental health issues are frequently shut
out of these chances. Money is a major aspectof this exclusion. The majority of parents who
