We've all read many carefully considered, well-crafted letters and articles pointing out who was to blame for the credit crunch. It seems that "everyone" knew things weren't right apart, of course, from the bankers, regulators, politicians and those deep in the trough. The rest of the world could see this coming.

But hold on a minute: if we're all gleefully pointing accusatory fingers, what were we doing about it at the time? What was the point of all those strategy workshops that look so good on our CPD records, and of all those heated debates a few years ago when the accounting profession was fighting over who should be at the top of the merger tree, if we all knew that things weren't right but didn't stand up and say so?

We claim to use our "excellent understanding of finance and business ... to shape the future of [our] organisations". Maybe the profession was so busy inventing IFRS to help former Sarbanes-Oxley consultants who...
