2024 has been the year of elections
around the world. None more so
than in Japan, which has seen
four major electoral contests. In
July, Tokyo’s gubernatorial election saw
incumbent Koike Yuriko secure a third
consecutive term as governor. Three major
national parties held leadership elections,
including both parties of the ruling
coalition – the Liberal Democratic Party
(LDP) and the Kōmeitō (KMT) – and the
largest opposition party, the Constitutional
Japan

Japan’s recent General Election saw the ruling coalition’s majority
split for the first time since 2009. The result has locked Japan’s party
system in a stalemate while its economy continues to struggle,
writes Jake Northey.

Then, on 27 October, Japan held a
surprise General Election. However, unlike
in the UK, public dissatisfaction with the
ruling party did not result in a change of
government. Although the ruling coalition
lost its majority for the first time in 15 years,
no party emerged with a simple majority.
The election result pales in comparison
to that of 2009, when then-opposition
Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) swept to
office with 308 seats (an increase of 193).
