Reform of the law of intestate succession in Scotland has been on the political agenda for some years, but progress has been hard to achieve. Following its most recent consultation on the subject in 2019, the Scottish Government concluded that a further period of research and evidence gathering was required to find a way forward that could command consensus (Scottish Government, “Response to Consultation on the Law of Succession” (May 2020) 4).
