Terminator 2
, Arnold
Schwarzenegger has featured in a
further three
Terminator
movies – of
variable quality, in my opinion. Boris Johnson
chose the phrase to end his nal appearance
at the dispatch box as Prime Minister on
20 July, and – inevitably – commentators
quickly pondered whether another
Terminator
catchphrase, ‘I’ll be back’, was
also on his mind. Unlike Schwarzenegger’s
character, a comeback seems unlikely,
though.
In little over a year after
The Times
reported that Johnson wanted to be Prime
Minister for a decade, he was forced to quit.

On the day Parliament entered recess this
summer, the parliamentary inquiry into
whether Johnson misled the House over the
‘partygate’ Downing Street gatherings was
in the news – one of the underlying reasons
that his leadership unravelled. If Johnson’s
political future after leaving Number 10
remains subject to speculation and debate,
his legacy is likely to be just as contested.
