An Act for the Improvement of the Borough of
Limerick. [15th August 1853.]
HEREAS an Act was passed in the Second Session of
Parliament holden in the Forty-seventh Year of the Reign
of His Majesty King George the Third, intituled An Act 47

for paving, cleansing, lightings and watching the Parish of Saint Sess.2. c. 75.
Michael in the Liberties of the City of Limerick, and adjoining the
said City, and for preventing and removing Nuisances therein; And
whereas another Act was passed in the Session of Parliament holden
in the Fifty-first Year of the Reign of His said Majesty King George
the Third, intituled An Act for altering and enlarging the Powers 51

of an Act of His present Majesty, for paving, cleansing, lighting, and c. 104.
watching the Parish of Saint Michael in the Liberties of the. City of
Limerick, and adjoining the said City, and for preventing and
removing Nuisances therein: And whereas it is expedient that the
said recited Acts should be repealed, and that the Powers created by
them should be transferred to the Mayor, Aldermen, and.Burgesses of
Limerick^ and that other and enlarged Powers and Provisions should
be made for the Municipal Regulation and Improvement of the said
Parish of Saint Michael and the other Places within the Borough of

Limerick: And whereas it is expedient that the Powers of presenting
and levying Rates or Cesses for divers local Purposes now vested in
the Grand Jury of the County of the City of Limerick should be
exercised by the Mayor, Aldermen, and Burgesses of the Borough:
And whereas it is also expedient that the Sewerage, Drainage, cleans-
ing, lighting, paving, Supply of Water, and the sanitary and general
Improvement of the said Borough should be placed under the Control
and Management of the Mayor, Aldermen, and Burgesses
thereof,
and
that all necessary Powers should be granted to them for the Purposes
aforesaid, and for the general good Government of the Borough, and
the Establishment and Regulation of a sufficient Police Force therein,
and the Construction of a Cemetery or Cemeteries, and all Powers for
regulating and superintending Prisons now possessed by the said
Grand Jury should be transferred to and exercised by the said Mayor,
Aldermen, and Burgesses ; but the same cannot be done without the
Authority of Parliament: May it therefore please Your Majesty that
it may be enacted ; and be it enacted by the Queen's most Excellent
Majesty, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Lords Spiritual
and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled,
and by the Authority of the same, as follows; (that is to say,)

The Word " Persons" shall include Corporations, aggregate or sole :
The Words " Superior Courts " shall mean Her Majesty's Superior
Courts of Record in Dublin ;
The Words "General Quarter Sessions" or "Quarter Sessions"
shall mean the General or Quarter Sessions of the Peace for the
Borough of Limerick holden at Limerick in and for the said
Borough:
The Expression " the Undertakers," " the Promoters of the Under-
taking," " the Company," and " the Commissioners" respectively
