Five of the last six winners of the Portland Handicap have either led or tracked the leaders in the early stages, a trend that was bucked last year's by the tricky Stone Of Destiny, who was held up behind rapid fractions and produced a big late kick to pass faltering rivals against the vacated stands' side rail.

A similar pace map is forecast this year with regular front-runners Danzeno, Mr Wagyu, Justanotherbottle, Copper Knight, King Of Stars, Digital and Major Jumbo all entered, so it could be wise to follow the pattern and side with a closer.

The unexposed Hurricane

Ivor warrants respect after a good run at York, but preference is for Capote's Dream, who has been primed for a crack at this £75,000 prize by up-and-coming trainer Tom Ward.

This unexposed four-yearold, who is guaranteed a start as the 19th entry in a maximum 22-runner field, began his season off a mark of 72 and has impressively racked up five victories and two runner-up finishes from just eight starts for his new connections. Two of those defeats came on unsuitably soft ground, while the other second came behind the well-handicapped Edraak.

After such a busy start to his year (on the go since February), there is no surprise that Ward...
