v.
Raimond
Furs (Bankruptcy Fur Company Proprietors)
For
the prosecution under the Endangered Species Act 1976, it was
stated
that
in the King Street window
of
the shop, Raimond Furs,
Manchester, (long-established traders in furs), there had been
displayed aleopard-skin coat for sale. In fact the coat had been
made up prior to the date
of
the Act. A member
of
the prosecuting
group
had
posed as a customer
of
the shop
and
gone inside to
obtain awritten estimate
of
the price, £3,999, which was given by
an assistant. This document was produced in evidence. A plea
of
guilty was entered and a fine
of
£750 imposed. The prosecution
emphasised the danger
of
extinction
of
great cats such as the
leopard because
of
the fur trade. A fur made up prior to the Act
could be offered for sale if licensed, but this procedure had been
overlooked by Raimond Furs. On discovery
of
various cases where
there ought to have been a licence, the P
.C.A.P.L.
's policy would
be to prosecute.
