Majestic Edinburgh art deco cinema saved from demolition as council halts plans

Although plans had hoped to have kept some of the unique style and character of the cinema, which was most recently a bingo hall, officials decided against the move.

A review by the council's Development Management sub committee had raised concerns the works would "damage the special architecture and historical interest" of the cinema.

Meeting to discuss the review this week, the concerns had been supported, with Scottish Housing News reporting that there had not been enough research into whether the building could be reused for its original use as a cinema.

The report read: "The assessment concludes that the applicant has not sufficiently demonstrated that the building is incapable of meaningful repair and has not fully demonstrated that the potential for the building to be re-used as a cinema (or similar compatible community use) has been fully explored."
