The Russia–Ukraine war requiresmanagement scholars to reect on the interconnected-
ness of research themes across countries, and across management disciplines. This paper
introduces the papers in this mini special section and discusses the interdisciplinary impli-
cations of the Russia–Ukraine war on themes that include – but are not limited to – man-
agement theory, banking, energy, culture, psychology and international entrepreneurship
and innovation.
Introduction
Extreme institutional environments have signi-
cant potential to enable management scholars to
better understand how rms and markets operate.
Extreme institutional environments also offer a
unique lens through which scholars can observein-
terconnections across elds of management schol-
arship and the globalization of research themes.
The British Journal of Management has had a re-
cent tradition of publishing research that high-
lights these themes in extreme institutional envi-
ronments in general (Cumming, Girardone and
Sliwa, 2021), as well as selecting extreme contexts,
such as the impact of Brexit (Wood and Budhwar,
2016) and the COVID pandemic (Sheng et al.,
2021). With the outbreak of the Russia–Ukraine
war,and to encourage scholarship in a new section
of the journal, I proposed a theme for a special
section on the Russia–Ukraine war with ve en-
couraged submissions.1The Russia–Ukraine war
I owethanks to Shuang Ren and Riikka Sarala for helpful
comments and suggestions.
1To speed up the conversation on important and timely
worldwide topics, at the recommendation of the Edito-
rial Board in the autumn 2021 Editorial Board meet-
ing, the British Journal of Management introduced a
highlights the need and responsibility of manage-
ment research to help society and address grand
challenges.
The purpose of this introductory paper is
twofold. First, I provide an overview of how
the Russia–Ukraine war can infor m manage-
ment scholarship, including topics in banking, en-
ergy, culture, psychology and international en-
trepreneurship. I do so by introducing the papers
in this special section of the British Journal of
Management. Second, I encourage future scholar-
ship on the topic along the lines introduced by the
papers in this special section. Scholarship on the
topic could focus on the Russia–Ukraine conict,
or other conicts around the world. Research in
these special section papers show that topics and
approaches can and should be interdisciplinary
and affect all areas of management scholarship.
Further, this area of scholarship reminds us that
people and the institutional settings in which they
new type of submission: shorter research notes of up to
2500 words (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/page/journal/

submissions were made in consultation with the two co-
editors, Shuang Ren and Riikka Sarala, and in consulta-
tion with the British Academy of Management publica-
tions committee in order to ensure a broad representation
of equity, diversity and inclusivity.
