The older, forward portion of the catalogue once again sold well, marginally dearer on the week, and peaked at £1490 for a super hefty jet-black Limousin bullock at 20 months from GeoffOgle, Blackburn, with three more selling at similar rates to average £1456 for a delighted Mr Ogle.

The heifer trade was crowned by an exceptional black Limmy lass at just 13 months of age which sold in the last moments of the sale and flew to £1400 for Alfie & John Marr, Old Ravensworth, Gateshead. At a similar age was the lead lady from highly regarded father-daughter team Graham & Gemma Common, Low Ardley, which scaled to a mighty £1300. Bidding from all quarters was sustained throughout their run of 14 that returned at £1121 throughout representing a lift of well over £100 per head on the year and a good omen for the annual run of bullocks entered for next week's sale.

Angus cattle once again sold well and topped at a rewarding £1410 for a weighty bullock from Ken Sisterson, Newlands Haugh, who saw his 11 steers average £1270, including Charolais and Simmental crosses of a similar stamp, topping at £1370 and £1355 respectively.

The middle aged bracket of cattle; those at 11-17 months of age, besides the heifers previously mentioned, were dominated by the annual run of bullocks from James Herdman, Edlingham, Newtown, who consigned a super packet of steers at 12-15 months that peaked at £1365 for a cracking pair of Anguses followed by Charolais at £1350 twice and an occasional Limousin cross steer at £1260, which contributed to an average, all told of just £6 shy of £1300, an increase of £130 on the year for the respected Alnwick-based producer.

Once again the youngest class of calves saw a lift, with a better show of quality on the week attaining deserved reward and the best of each breed scaling to new heights. The class was topped by a simply sublime pen of three outstanding Angus cross-steers by registered sires from Keith Hall and family, West Butsfield, Tow Law, and the newly established family faming enterprise were delighted with their first trip to Hexham, with six selling to average £1149 throughout.

Continental crosses followed closely behind at £1190 for a smashing Limousin cross bullock at 10 months from Messrs Bell, Woodhall, Bardon Mill, who enjoyed a blistering trade for a great run of calves in which two heifers hit £1100 and the packet of 20 (8 steers and 12 heifers) returned at £1040 per head, representing another good lift on the year.

James Macgregor, East Loanend, sold a super steer at £1145 and saw his four bullocks and two heifers average £1062, making another trip to Hexham well worthwhile for the Berwick-based breeder.
