Memorial service for Vallings.

The many achievements of Vice-Admiral Sir George Vallings, former secretary of the institute, were celebrated at a memorial service in Guildford Cathedral last month. It was attended by several hundred of his friends and former colleagues, representing the different parts of his full and varied life.

The Duke of Edinburgh was represented by yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnson in recognition of Vallings' long association with yachting and his participation in the Sydney-to-Rio leg of the Round the World Race, as well as his activities with the International Association of Cape Horners and the Tall Ships Race. Many current and former Royal Navy personnel also paid tribute.

Vallings' work with the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen was recognised by the superintendent of the Scrabster Mission, who read the lesson. The proceeds of the collection were donated to this charity.
