A possible consolidation between CIMA, the Institute for Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and the Chartered Institute for Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) has moved one step closer to reality after the governing councils of all three bodies agreed to further consultation. A period of discussion on the details of high-level strategy will now take place so that formal proposals can be put to each of the three councils in December.

Strategic consolidation has been given the green light in principle by all three bodies. Over the next few months the institutes will be conducting an extensive nationwide and overseas consultation to present the findings of their strategic reviews and to examine the benefits of consolidation as a potential fast track towards common goals. If the December proposals are ratified, CIMA, ICAEW and CIPFA members could be asked to vote on the merger as early as spring next year.
