BOOK REVIEW
Museums in a time of migration: Rethinking
museums’ roles, representations, collections
and collaborations. Johansson, Christina and
Bevelander, Peter (eds.). Lund Nordic Academic
Press, 2017. ISBN: 978- 91- 88168- 82- 5, pp. 262.
This p ublication i s one of the outcomes of the ongoi ng research project “Museums a nd arenas for integr ation
New perspec tives and meth ods of inclusion,” wh ich is financed by th e European Union’s A sylum, Migrat ion and
Integration Fun d (AMIF), as well as the Malmö Inst itute for Studies of Migration, Diversi ty and Welfare (MIM) at
the Univer sity of Malmö. The eleven ch apters were orig inally presented as papers at the conference “Museums
in Times of Migration an d Mobility: Pr ocesses of Repre sentation, Colla boration, Inclus ion and Social Exchange,”
which took place in M almö in May 2016.
Given t hat the city of Malmö is a highly relevant lo cation in terms of global migr ation, it has become a re-
nowned ce ntre for the study of migration an d social integ ration and inclusion. The MIM researc h group, whic h
consists of specialists from a range of disciplines encompassing the humanities, social sciences, education, econ-
omy and law, undertakes a transvers al analysis of the phenomenon of mobility, demography and recep tion, as well
as discourses on m igration and ethnicit y.
Drawing on the foundational definition of the mus eum proposed by the International Council of Museums
(ICOM) in Vienna in 20071., thi s study addresses mu seums as c ultural centre s undergoing transformatio ns and
that need to engage with inclusive discours es concerning vis itors while maint aining a “visio n” of the diversit y of
native citizen s. Today the role of the museum as a manifestation of a state or monarchic power that once domi-
nated overs eas colonies an d indigenous ci vilizations is o bsolete and un appealing to vi sitors, who have a greater
awareness of the pro cesses of mi gration, social transformati on and glob alization. Alt hough there are still many
cultural in stitutions that a dhere to a model of national identit y in their cura torial discourse, t he outcomes of th e
Malmö conferenc e established a prest igious academic fram e of reference to update museol ogical narratives.
The editor s’ introduction firstly pre sents a solid theoretical fo undation for mig ration as a cu ltural phenome-
non, and they go on to undertake an exhaustive survey of recent publication s on museums as institut ions for social
integration a nd as sites of encounte r between a natio n’s native inhabitants and those that have e migrated there.
Their discussion of the democratization of museums and the representation of ethnic minorities in museological
discourses signals the editor s’ engagement with an inclusive prax is, in terms of bo th museums’ exhibit ion access
policy and the ir educational and out reach activities.
The edited volum e is divided into four part s, and chapters in each pa rt are based on case stu dies: “The role of
museums in a time of migration and social change,” “Representing migration and ethnicity,” “Rethinking museum
collections a nd documentation” and “Co llaboration and inclus ion in the museum sector.”
The open ing section addresses the function of museums and underscores th eir role as guardians of cul tural
heritage, and analyse s their significance regarding their histor y and role in the global integration . The three studies
