Defining the X-factor that makes one leader more effective than another is a task that has eluded academics and consultants alike. But now an analysis of entries for a competition to find the UK's best businesses and entrepreneurs has established common qualities exhibited by high achievers.

Entries to the 2003 National Business Awards were analysed and the results were published in a report written by Philip Forrest, chairman of the judging panel. Forrest, a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, identified good leadership as the single most important factor in success. He also identified two distinct groups of characteristics--enabling and operational--that contributed to business achievement.
