Necessity the mother of (Re) invention –a
scoping review
Matt Broadway-Horner
Abstract
Purpose –The purpose ofthis scoping review is to find studies testing out psychologicalinterventions to
help victims of conversiontherapy. Life after conversion therapy canbe devastating; nonetheless, what
treatmentmodalities are available for thispopulation?
Design/methodology/approach –This studyadopts scoping review process using JBI protocol.
Findings –There are minimal results to conclude upon. The paper presents discussion on future
research and inquiry. The author introduces a positive autoethnogr aphy, adapting the model
created by Tedeschi and Calhoun (2004) to create the post-conversi on recovery process to aid
recovery.
Research limitations/implications –Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing and positive
autoethnographyoffer valuable insights, but further research is needed to help survivors.
Practical implications –To reduce the current death-by-suicide trends, more education and training
are neededto help this specialised group.
Social implications –The suicide rates for sexualminority conversion therapy victims are eight times
higher than those of othersexual minority groups and isolation levels. A single pointof entry pathway for
conversiontherapy survivors is needed.
Originality/value –To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first review addressing gay
conversion therapy and disfellowship. It requires further attention, and there are gaps in the knowledge
that needto be filled.

Background
Despite increased awareness of the stigma of mental health within male sexual minorities,
intersex and questioning communities, there still are health inequalities. A framework that
helps explain these disparities is Meyer’s(2003) Minority Stress. The theory states two types
of stressors: distal and proximal. The latter is called proximal or internalised homophobia.
This stressor has a relationship with mental health problems. Those without proximal or
internalised homophobia may have the resilience factor, protecting them from the potential
for a mental illness to develop (Otis and Skinner, 1996).
The research in this area has not concluded fully, with more investigation needed to be
focused on religious communities that practice conversion therapies. The impact of
conversion therapy followedby disfellowship is one area that remains unstudied, but what is
known is that in conversion therapy, sexual minorities are eight times as likely to die by
suicide, which is higher than King et al.’s (2008) estimate looking at the general sexual
minority population. Access to psychological therapies is increasing, especially in countries
like the UK. Nevertheless, many psychological therapy training programs lack teaching/
supervision modules focused on sexual minorities both theoretically and in clinical practice
skills (Bjo
¨rkenstam et al.,2016).
