This work is an excellent reference source on civil processes in England and Wales. It also contains an overview of international themes within the civil justice sphere. The treatment of the subject is impressive both in depth and breadth. It is primarily a practical discussion of civil justice mechanisms; however, the author also manages to blend the principles, theory and themes in the area in a unique way.
The modern civil practitioner cannot survive these days knowing only about litigation. Mediation and arbitration are more and more common, and there are important interfaces between all three methods, especially litigation and mediation, given the cost provisions and case law under the English & Welsh Civil Procedure Rules (CPR). All of this is tackled by the author, and in considerable detail. The author very cleverly keeps the practical and the broader discursive material separate, so that the practitioner can dip into the technical detail of a particular area quickly. The book is, in general terms, split into three subject areas: (a) civil litigation in England and Wales; (b) mediation; and (c) arbitration. Each of these will now be discussed in turn.
