Carlos has established himself as a mainstay at the back for Sevilla since joining the Spanish heavyweights from Nantes in the summer of 2019

The 28-year-old has made 26 appearances in all competitions at club level this season, helping to keep 14 clean sheets and popping up with two goals in the process.

Newcastle are said to be keen on bringing the defender to Tyneside in an attempt to shore up their leaky back four ahead of the Premier League run-in.

Reports have claimed that at least two offers for his services have already been rejected by Sevilla, who are looking to take advantage of Newcastle's newly-found riches by holding out for a premium fee.

It seems as though the Magpies could soon miss out on Carlos if they are unable to stump up the cash required to secure his signature in the near future.

They have already drawn up a contingency plan in the event of a move being impossible to engineer by identifying Caleta-Car as a potential alternative, according to 90min.

It is claimed that Newcastle are keen admirers of the Marseille defender, who was reportedly targeted by Liverpool at the beginning of last year.

The Reds were desperate to bring in a new centre-back in order to alleviate their growing injury crisis and submitted an offer for Caleta-Car before eventually opting to sign Ozan Kabak on a six-month loan deal from Schalke.

The former has only played on 10 occasions in Ligue 1 since the beginning of the current campaign and will reportedly be allowed to leave Marseille on loan before the end of the month.
