Book review
of using or implementing the model from different
perspectives, including service users.
Chapter 1 is helpful as it situates the model
alongside other interventions such as Triple
P, while chapters 6–8 and 10 provide further
accounts of its origins and values. The relevant
research findings can be found in chapters 9 and
11. Chapter 9 discusses interviews with children
aged 3–5 years who attended Newpin, while
Chapter 11 presents the findings of a UK-based
randomised controlled trial (RCT), which reported
that the model had a positive impact by reducing
the rate of perinatal depression in a sample of 30
mothers (35 in the control group). Other findings
in the book relate to small-scale qualitative studies,
which all report that service users and children
enjoyed the experience and found it tremendously
helpful in turning around their lives. There are
numerous personal stories told directly by service
users, many of whom went on to develop careers
working for Newpin projects.
The book will be of great interest to
practitioners and managers who might like to
revisit the potential of this model, or to those
interested in the challenges facing those trying
to implement an innovation in child welfare,
including obtaining and sustaining funding, ensuring
programme fidelity and fitting in with national
policy initiatives. Newpin was introduced to
Australia from the UK in 1988, so the book serves
as a useful case study of some of the issues of
transplanting programmes from one cultural and
geographical context to another – an area of
growing interest in children’s services.
This book is about an organisation in Australia
called Uniting Care Burnside (UCB) and the
story of a model of practice that started out life
in London and has been adopted by UCB for
use in Australia. While not entirely devoid of
relevant research findings what this book primarily
offers is an unusual account of an intervention
that originated in the UK and transferred into
practice in Australia. The book details the journey
of the innovative approach of New Parent
Infant Network (Newpin), outlining the context,
practices and challenges from a number of diverse
perspectives, during the 10 years since its inception
in Australia.
Newpin was originally developed in the
UK in the early 1980s. It originated as a child
protection model with the general aim to improve
relationships within families by breaking through
destructive cycles of behaviour, through parent
education and family support. It consists of a
12-week programme for parents, which looks at
their own experiences of being parented and how
this affects their current relationships. There is also
a Family Play Programme and a six-week course in
supporting members moving towards employment
or training. What sets the model apart from other
family support-type interventions is the intensity
and duration of the programme combined with its
reliance on peer support and vocational education
for parents.
The book’s 31 short chapters cover four areas:
the background and context of the model; how it
works in practice, including its theoretical base; the
findings from two evaluations; and the experience
