Abstract
Purpose This paper aims to make news as a platform for the librariesto transmit information from the
library resourcesand events to the huge mass of the society. The focus of the study is to design a owchart of
digestingthe daily news and interlink them regularly to the library resourcesand events to build up a chain of
development on a topic, enhancethe easy promotion of the library resources to the public and offer them easy
access to information.
Design/methodology/approach The study is a theoretical explanation from the point of view of
increasing the use of news acquiredby a library and its resources. Literature on news-clippingservice of the
libraries, various news-clipping software and the trending online news applications have been studied
extensivelyto ensure a harmonic design of the proposed owchart.
Findings The ndings of the study describe the news digests that are expected as the outcome of the
owchart. The signicant features and advantages of the news digestshave also been discussed in the study.
Research limitations/implications The limitation of the study is that the owchart which has
been designed and described in this study is a blueprint. It has not been developed in real and has not
been tested. But from the librarys perspective, if the owchart is developed and implemented in each
library, it will maximize the utilization and consumption of information from the news and library
resources.
Originality/value News applicationsare dynamic and often publish similaror ambiguous news which is
difcult for an individual to identify. Moreover, the libraries mostly provide news-clipping service. If the
libraries can collect the news and process them in their own way, it can extract the complete and actual
information. The libraries can also tag their possessions for complementing each news digest and thus
providingthe users for accessing an authentic content of information.

Paper type Viewpoint
1. Introduction
The news is the primary source of current information in the society and is procuredby the
libraries in different forms for serving daily information to the users. Most of the libraries
have a newspaper section and some also provide news-clipping service. The implication of
information technology in the libraries has helped them to offer daily online news/
e-newspapers through the library website to the users irrespective of geographic location
and time. But the question lies why will the userscome to read print or e-newspapers/online
news in the libraries/librarywebsites, as they are available easily?
The role of the libraries should not be conned in procuring and preservingonline news
and print or e-newspapersbut should be dissemination of information embeddedin them by
processing, organizing and referencingnews in the most relevant way. The news service of
the libraries must be unique so that it can be functional and valuable in alleviating ones
