MURDER is much in
the
public eye, though statistics do
not
show any real increase in this mysterious
and
there-
fore fascinating crime.
The
trial of outstanding interest has
been
that
of Alfred Arthur Rouse before
Mr.
Justice Talbot at
Northamptonshire Assizes, convicted by a
jury
after twenty
minutes' deliberation, following on a six day trial of
the
murder
of a
man
unknown in a lonely country lane, as
it
was alleged,
by hitting him on
the
head and then, after having soaked his
clothes in petrol, burning him to death.
This
indeed was a
typical case of circumstantial evidence built up of a mosaic of
small details, such as
the
position of the body, the position of a
mallet,
the
position of a petrol can, the
tum
of a
nut,
the
prisoner's statements
that
he went 300 or 400 yards down the
road for a necessary purpose with his suitcase.
It
was an
unfortunate fact that the
jury
could
not
fail to know from
the
police court proceedings much about
the
prisoner's compli-
cated relations with women which was not told them at
the
Assizes.
The
prisoner's appeal was dismissed.
A man named Gibb, who till
the
day of his death followed
with keen interest
the
doings of his Northern Union football
team, has been executed for
the
very brutal murder of an old
money-lender at Keighley, the motive of which was apparently
to get a few pounds for a holiday at Blackpool. Murderers are
supreme egotists. A young
man
namedBetts has beenexecuted
for robbing
and
killing a Birmingham messengerwho was carry-
ing £900 to
the
Bank, while his accomplice who struck no blow
was reprieved.
The
Isle of
Man
has had its first murder trial
for fifty-eight years, a case of an escaped madman. Unsolved
murder mysteries unfortunately accumulate,
the
most con-
spicuous being
the
shocking
murder
and
mutilation of a young
servant girl on Blackheath. Avery different case has been
