Abstract
Purpose –The purpose of this paperis to add to the understanding of the human personality of fraudsters.
This paper will explore theirhuman personality by reviewing three characters from realistnovels that have
fraudsters as their leadingcharacters. This pa[er will also contribute to literature thatintersects between the
humanitiesand criminology.
Design/methodology/approach –This paper reviews three fraudstercharacters from realist novels to
exploretheir human personality, which includes qualitative phenomenaresistant to positivist research.
Findings –Literature character review that adds to understanding of the qualitative nature of the
personality of fraudsters. This qualitative nature of the human personality has been neglected in fraud
research and the findings contribute to expanding understanding of the qualitative nature of fraud and
fraudsters.
Research limitations/implications –This paper is limited to a literaturereview from three characters
from realistnovels.
Practical implications –By expanding understanding of the human personality of fraudsters literary
insightscan contribute to fraud identification and prevention.
Originality/value –This paper reviews the humanpersonality of three characters from novels to expand
understanding of fraudsters,and thus contributes to the intersection of researchbetween the humanities and
criminologyand fraud research.

Introduction
Transparency International defines corruption as “[...] the abuse of entrusted power for
private gain”(www.transparency.org/cpi). According to historians, corruption has been a
problem since ancient times (Aidt, 2003;Pinto et al.,2008), and one theory is that tax
collectors designed the first anti-corruption measure when they created written codes to
ensure that their tariffs were being accurately levied (Ezzamel, 2012). Despite this ancient
lineage, recent researchconfirms however that corruption remains an acute problem (United
Nations, 2021).
The contention of this articleis that corruption reflects the dark side of society becauseit
reflects the dark side of the human personality. In consequence, corruption needs to be
appreciated with reference to the human personality, to examine its human factors,
including psychological,emotional, moral and ethical phenomena. This article is predicated
on the view that understandingof corruption and corrupt individuals can be enhanced when
augmented with insights taken the humanities, in this instance, from insights taken from
character reviews from threenovels. This article will therefore contribute to the researchon
corrupt individuals that examines their identification, prevention and personal
characteristics (Cooper et al.,2013, p. 440), The article will also contribute to the individual
wrongdoing literature (Brody et al., 2012;Hoffman and Zimbelman, 2009). This article’s
