An EU official has said that plans for an EU banking union are still alive, even though the initiative could have gone cold for the time being.

Plans for a banking union were launched in 2012 and it envisaged a single system for regulating top Eurozone lenders. The European Central Bank was made the lead regulator for big Eurozone banks, while another entity was constituted to take care of failing lenders.

Efforts for a bank-funded European deposit insurance scheme ran into trouble however...
