Abstract
Purpose –This study examined the participation in mental health takaful schemes among young
intellectualsin two public universities in Malaysia.
Design/methodology/approach –Drawing from the Attitude-Social Influence-Self-Efficacy(ASE), this
study evaluated the effectsof attitude, social influence and self-efficacyon participation in mental health
takaful schemes using an empirical investigation surveying 767 respondents who were identified as
young intellectualsin Malaysia.
Findings –Evidently, the ASE factors shape the development of participation in mental health takaful
schemesamong young intellectuals.
Research limitations/implications –This study is confinedin terms of the context and variablesused –
which limitsits generalisation. Future studiesshould address these issuesaccordingly.
Practical implications –The results obtained can become a yardstick to gauge the participation of
young intellectualsin mental health takaful in Malaysia.
Originality/value –This study introducedmental health takaful to the ASE, where young intellectualsare
broughtinto play.

Introduction
According to World Mental Health Report (2022), mental health is intrinsic and instrumental
to the lives of all people. Good mental health can lead to the formation of positive feelings,
thoughts and behaviours for improved capacity to make choices, form bonds with others
and influence the environment in which we live. Mental health is a human right and vital as
our physical health. When one has good mental health, he can manage life’s stressors and
optimise his potential. This also enables him to work efficiently and participate in our
communities. Being in good mental health is essential for one’s survival and sustainability,
where diversity comes into play. Despite mental health’s critical importance to our health
and well-being, too many of us do not get the support we need (World Mental Health
Report, 2022). Following Global Health Data Exchange (2023), one in every eight people, or
970 million people around the world were living with a mental disorder, with anxiety and
depressive disorders being the most common. At the same time, the services, skills and
funding available for mental health remainin short supply and fall far below what is needed.
The term takaful is sourced from the verb takafala, which refers to “joint guarantee”. Simply
put, takaful implies “shared guarantee” (Hamid et al.,2009). During the past ten years,
takaful has seen a great deal of success in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, with
continued population expansion among Muslim communities (Hussain and Noor, 2018).
