Patient-led co-production in community
mental health nursing practice: part 2
Jo Mullen
Abstract
Purpose The purposeof this paper is to provide an example of patient-led co-production.
Design/methodology/approach The New Economics Foundation’s six principles of co-production
(nef, 2013) have been used to frame the activities undertaken during the author’s relationship with a
communitymental health nurse.
Findings This paper describes a co-produced project between a patient and a community mental health
nurse to create a range of resources and to deliver training, resulting in mutual benefit for both parties.
Practical implications This paper invites policy makers to consider the unique role that community
mental health nurses can play in supporting patients with long-term challenges that have developed
because of an imbalance and an abuse of power within earlier relationships; by adopting a co-production
approach, centred on the patient’s interests and skills, a working partnership can be achieved wherein both
parties feel that they matter.
Originality/value Co-production is usually used with groups of stakeholders working together in an
equitable way to design or deliver a new service; this paper, however, seeks to demonstrate how the
process can be effectively used when the project is patient-led within the context of a therapeutic
relationship.

Approach
The following is a reflectionon the activities undertaken within the second of two therapeutic
relationships I experienced with different community mental health nurses, between 2003
and 2009, and 2013 and 2018, respectively. The first relationship, or case study, was
discussed in “Patient-led co-production in community mental health nursing practice:
part 1” (Mullen, 2024).
Like the first case study, this second one will be considered within the context of the six
principles of co-production, demonstrating how the activities tha t were integral to the
relationship align to each principle. Similarly, my point of reference f or the definition of
co-production is that used by the New Economics Foundation (nef) within each of the following
publications: The Challenge of Co-production (2009); Right Here Right No w.Taking Co-
production into the Mainstream, in collaboration with NESTA (20 10); and Co-production in
Mental Health. A Literature Review, commissioned by the mental healt h charity Mind (2013).
In the last of these publications, nef uses the following as its working definition of co-
production:
A relationship where professionals and citizens share power to plan and deliver support
together, recognising that both partners have vital contributions to make in order to improve
quality of life for people and communities. (nef,2013, p. 6)
