Abstract
Purpose –This study aims to analyze the relationship between the personal responsibility, the intrinsic
knowledgeof the norms and the knowledge of signs of money laundering of accountants.
Design/methodology/approach –The research was developed with responses from 381 Brazilian
accountingprofessionals through a survey, statisticallyanalyzed using structural equations.
Findings –The results indicatethat personal responsibility directly affects the levelsof intrinsicknowledge
and knowledge about signs of money laundering; however, the different dimensionsof knowledge were not
related to eachother.
Practical implications –From these results, organizations can clarify the individual about their
responsibility,optimizing the use of training and mitigatingcosts, with greater sustainability and securityfor
the organization,employees and business partners.
Social implications –The results contribute to the construction and modeling of latent constructs on
money launderingknowledge, with validity, reliability and statisticalsignificance.
Originality/value –This research discusses and empirically explores the knowledge about money
launderingof the accountants’, one of the main explanatory factorsof whistleblowing in business.

Money laundering has probably existed since the first crimewith a financial impact, as the
criminal’s rational procedure is to hide his/her practice to obtain benefits (Krambia-
Kapardis, 2020;Rose, 2020).The resources raised, through the overt or concealed practice of
