The Petty Sessions Areas (Amendment) Order 2001

Coming into force in accordance with article 1

The Lord Chancellor, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 4 of the Justices of the Peace Act 19971, makes the following Order:

Citation, commencement and interpretation

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Petty Sessions Areas (Amendment) Order 2001 and shall come into force for the purposes of article 3 on 31st March 2002 and for all other purposes on 1st April 2001.

(2) In this Order “the 1999 Order” means the Petty Sessions Areas Order 19992.

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order substitutes a new list for the list of petty sessions areas in the Petty Sessions Areas Order 1999. The new list substituted by this Order takes account of changes to magistrates' courts committee areas effected by Orders that establish on 1st April 2001 the following magistrates' courts committees:

Greater Manchester (the magistrates' courts committees for Manchester, North and West Greater Manchester, Oldham, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford are abolished);

South Yorkshire (the magistrates' courts committees for Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield are abolished);

Sussex (the magistrates' courts committees for East Sussex and West Sussex are abolished); and

West Mercia (the magistrates' courts committees for Hereford and Worcester and Shropshire are abolished).

The new list also takes account of section 30A(2) of the Justices of the Peace Act 1997 (inserted by section 83(1) of the Access to Justice Act 1999) which provides that the Greater London Magistrates' Courts Authority shall be the magistrates' courts committee for Greater London. Section 30A(2) comes into force on 1st April 2001.

The new list also takes account of changes to petty sessions areas in Humberside effected by the Petty Sessions Areas (Humberside) Order 2001. Those changes take effect on 31st March 2002.

(2) S.I.1999/3009; amended by S.I.1999/3220; S.I.2000/515, 517, 628, 675, 1385, 1550, 1716, 2256, 2635 and 3100; S.I.2001/292 and 602.
(3) The petty sessions areas for Beverley and the Wolds, Bridlington, and Hull and Holderness were constituted by S.I.2001/292.
(4) The Avon and Somerset magistrates' courts committee was constituted by S.I.1998/3133.
(5) Section 30A(2) of the Justices of the Peace Act 1997 (c. 25) (inserted by section 83(1) of the Access to Justice Act 1999 (c. 22)) provides that the Greater London Magistrates' Courts Authority shall become the magistrates' courts committee for Greater London. Section 30A(2) comes into force on 1st April 2001.
(6) The Greater Manchester magistrates' courts committee was constituted by S.I.1999/2426.
(7) The Hampshire and Isle of Wight magistrates' courts committee was constituted by S.I.1999/523.
(8) The Northumbria magistrates' courts committee was constituted by S.I.1998/2707 as amended by S.I.1998/3108.
(9) The South Yorkshire magistrates' courts committee was constituted by S.I.1999/2209.
(10) The Sussex magistrates' courts committee was constituted by S.I.1999/2542.
