DOG
TRAINING.
To
the Editor of THE
POLICE
JOURNAL.
SIR,
In
Volume
III,
NO.4, of The PoliceJournal (October 1930) one of your
contributors, in an article
entitled'
Police Dog
Training:
German Practice,'
makes the following statement :
'There
are actually six different breeds of dogs used for service in
Germany, all
of
which carry a very strong shepherd dog strain (the italics are
mine) which
are:
Deutscher Schaferhund (known in this country under the
misnomer of Alsatian Wolf Dog), Dobermann-Pinscher; Airedale
Terrier;
Rottweiler; Riesenschnauzer; and last
but
by no means least in point of
importance Deutsche Boxer.'
The
author also
states:
'The
third breed in
order of merit is
our
Airedale.
They
are very useful when trained and have
done some really good police work at
our
docks,
but
are, generally speaking,
none too easy to train.' (By the way is an untrained dog ever of much use ?)
I wish, in the interests of accuracy, to point
out
that the only members
of these breeds who can claim to shepherd dog blood are the Deutscher
Schliferhund and the Dobermann-Pinscher.
The
Deutsche
Boxer-a
sort of cousin of
our
Bull Mastiff-possesses no stronger shepherd dog
strain than the
Man
in
the
Moon, and it is extremely doubtful whether
shepherd dogs played any part at all in the breeding of the Airedale,
the
Rottweiler and the Riesenschnauzer,
Finally, I would like tochallenge the statement that Airedales
are'
gener-
ally speaking, none too easy to train.'
This
British breed of ours did
signal service during
the
Great War, and reference to any of Lieut.-Colonel
Richardson's books on dogs (Lieut.-Colonel Richardson was Commandant
of the British War Dog School and
has
devoted many years to the breeding
and training of Airedale
Terriers}-and
to
Mr.
Holland Buckley (Mr. Holland
Buckley is the British judge of Airedale Terriers, and the author of a study
on this breed) will give your readers an entirely different opinion as to the
amenity of the Airedale to training.
That
the Germans themselves have recognized the full value of
our
Airedales is obvious.
Herr
Silvester Frey in his book Der Poliseihund : seine
Geschichte, Zucht und Abrichtung, speaks in
the
warmest terms of their
uses as Police and War Dogs, and that great authority,
Herr
Robert Gersbach,
states that the Airedale is ' most remarkably intelligent and of incorruptible
fidelity. He understands the slightest word and
the
slightest gesture, and
executes with rapidity all he is told to do.' Does this evidence imply that
the
Airedale is ' none too easy to train ? '
Isubmit, sir, that the Airedale
Terrier
is, ' generally speaking,' no more
difficult to train than any other breed of dog, and I submit also
that
your
contributor's statement to the contrary, in view of the authorities I have
quoted, who hold opinions in direct contradiction to his, does not appear
even to have the benefit of
being'
made in Germany.'
