COMPARISONS
OF
THE

THE
UNITED

INTRODUCTION

The
United
Kingdom
has
seen
a
substantial
expansion
ot
post-graduate
business
administration
education
during
the
past
twenty
years.
Professional
and
management
education
programmes
are
popular
curricula
with
students,
and
have
the
cooperation
and
support
ot
many
private
sector
firms
that
allow
or
encourage
their
employees
to
pursue
further
education
and
training.
The
success
of
the
Masters
of
Business
Administration
(MBA)
degree
in
the
UK
is
testimony
to
the
popularity
and
acceptance
of
this
degree
over
the
past
two
decades.
Post-graduate
public
sector
education
and
training
is
less
well-
developed
in
the
United
Kingdom.
Historically,
the
public
sector
has
recruited
undergraduates
with
broad
educational
backgrounds
(in
such
fields
as
classics
or
history,
for
example)
rather
than
those
with
specific
technical
training.
This
has
been
particularly
true
of
civil
service
employment.
Work
experience
has
been
emphasised
in
the
UK,
to
such
a
level
that
post-graduate
degrees
are
seen
not
only
as
not
very
helpful,
but
appear
to
be
a
distinct
disadvantage
compared
to
those
who
have
enjoyed
the
extra
year
or
two
or
work
experience.
During
the
19808,
however,
a
number
ot
post-graduate
public
administration,
public
management,
or
public
policy
courses
have
been
created.
In
fact,
many
of
the
post-graduate
public
administration
programmes
identified
by
this
study
were
created
after
1986. As
such,
little
systematic
information
has
been
available
about
the
success
of
these
programmes,
and
little
meaningful
aggregate
information
has
been
collected
as
ot
1989-1990.
Public
sector
training
(rather
than
education)
appears
much
more
common,
with
specific
short
courses
(lasting
from
a
few
days
to
a
tew
weeks)
focusing
on
one
major
management
area
(financial;
human
resources)
or
one
specific
technical
skill
(information
technology).
