Abstract
Purpose –The study aims to identify the predictors of depression and anxiety among carers of
hospitalizedpatients with mental illness in EradahComplex for Mental Health Hospital.
Design/methodology/approach –A descriptive correlational study design was conducted using a
convenient sample of family carers of patients with mental illness (N¼216). The study used the Beck
DepressionInventory and Anxiety Inventory scales.
Findings –The results of regressionmodels revealed that the socio-demographiccharacteristics of the
family carers showed that age is a statistically significant predictor of family carers depression and
anxiety scores. In addition, the age of the family carers explained 36% of the variance in the family carers
depression and anxiety scores, while marital status explained 64% of the total variance in the family
carers’ depression and anxiety scores. Furthermore, having received support in caring significantly
predicted depression and anxiety scores, and this was the case for occupation status and being
diagnosedwith any form of chronic illness.
Practical implications –Based on the findingsof this study, the authors opine that evaluationsof carers’
cognitivestrategies and social support are neededto determine the risk of depression in carersof mental
patients.
Originality/value –This study is the one of the limited studies conducted in Saudi Arabia to identify
predictor of depression and anxietyamong caregivers of hospitalized patients with mental illness. The
study hasused a validated scales to assess themain study outcomes.

Background
Mental diseases are among the primary causes of morbidity and disability throughout the
world, with estimates indicating that one in every four families has at least one family
member suffering from a mental disorder (Karabekiro
glu et al.,2018). According to the
World Health Organization, over 450 million individuals were suffering from a mental or
behavioural disease by the end of 2001 (Chang et al.,2016). However, in 2017,
approximately one billion people experienced one or more mental disorders, including
substance use disorders (Chang et al.,2017). However, despite the high prevalence of
mental diseases, there is a lack of effective response in terms of treatment and provision of
care for people suffering from mental illnesses (Macneil et al., 2010). According to the
World Health Organization, only 25% and 15% of people suffering from mental problems in
low- and middle-income countriesreceive treatment, respectively (Ong et al.,2016).
A disproportionate number of mentally ill patients in developing nations are receiving care
from medical professionals or professional carers, according to the data that has been
collected to date. Furthermore, the availability of regular care homes or psychiatric hospitals
