I am delighted to have updated this essential publication with Dr Julie Doughty from Cardiff University, now in its sixth edition.
Our thanks go to both Barbara Mitchels and Helen James, for having been our co-authors on the previous edition, and providing an excellent account of their experiences.
Since the previous edition in 2012, Julie and I have extensively updated the book with practicality, accessibility and strong roots in practice.
By way of background, I have practised as a solicitor in both the private practice and local authority sectors. Currently, I continue to practise as a solicitor, manager and team leader in advocacy with Coventry City Council, Legal Services Department. The innovative and restructured legal department promotes extensive staff development, which has led to achieving various awards, such as the Birmingham Law Society In House Legal Team of the Year 2017, and the Municipal Journal Achievement Awards 2017. I also continue to run training courses across both England and Wales to various members of the legal profession and other professionals. This often involves Professional Development training for, amongst others, members of the Law Society Children Law Accredited Scheme. My practice involves running children law cases in all areas, and I have become more involved with the interrelationship between children proceedings and the Court of Protection, particularly with the continued developments in the law relating to deprivation of liberty, for both children and adults. I have written extensively in various legal journals on family and children law related matters over the last 25 years, including for the Law Society. I am a representative for the National Child Care Lawyers Advisory Legal Group, and I regularly advise legal representatives and other professionals across England and Wales in children and adoption related matters.
Julie Doughty has practice experience as a former solicitor and guardian ad litem panel manager, and currently is a lecturer in law at Cardiff University. Julie writes widely in journals on child law topics and is a trustee of The Transparency Project and Family Mediation Cymru.
Both Julie and I are members of the CoramBAAF Legal Advisory Group. In this edition, we have updated the text with academic and research information in child law and protection.
